Questions about an official Wake County criminal record should go to the office that created or maintains it. The contacts below distinguish court files at the Wake County Justice Center from sheriff reports, detention records, and the North Carolina fingerprint repository. Wake County Criminal History is a private reference site, so it cannot retrieve, certify, correct, or remove a government record.

This Is Not a Government Office. This private reference site cannot run an official background check, obtain a record for someone, correct a government file, or accept an expunction petition. Contact the responsible public office directly.

Use the custodian that matches the record sought in Wake County:

  • Court case files: use the Wake County court contact directory or contact the Clerk of Superior Court at 300 S. Salisbury St., Raleigh, NC 27601. Call (919) 792-4300 for criminal District and Superior Court records or (919) 792-4325 for record checks and expunctions. Public hours are weekdays, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • State criminal history: use the North Carolina SBI Right to Review process for your own fingerprint-supported state record.
  • Sheriff reports: contact the Wake County Sheriff's Records Division, John H. Baker Jr. Public Safety Center, second floor, Records S208, 330 S. Salisbury St., Raleigh, NC 27601. Email Sheriff.Records@wake.gov, fax (919) 743-7372, or visit weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5:15 p.m.

  • Police reports: ask the police department that created the report. A Raleigh, Cary, or Apex report does not become a sheriff report merely because booking occurred in Wake County.
  • Expunction: file the correct North Carolina court form through the clerk in the county of the case. Wake's direct expunction line is (919) 792-4325.
